Africa's oldest surviving botanic garden, founded in 1849

Founded in 1849, this is the oldest surviving botanic garden in Africa and a green refuge at the foot of the Berea ridge. The orchid house is the highlight, along with a famous cycad collection and a herbarium that documents two centuries of subtropical plant collecting. Free entry, open daily, and an easy hour's wander between the city centre and the beachfront.
