The Emmanuel Cathedral, on Cathedral Road in the heart of the old Indian quarter, is the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Durban. Built in the late 19th century in a Gothic Revival style, it has tall stained glass, a fine vaulted nave and an unusually diverse congregation reflecting Durban's mixed population.
It sits a couple of blocks from the Juma Masjid and Victoria Street Market; the three together — Catholic cathedral, mosque, market — are a compact map of the city's plural religious life. Visitors are welcome outside service times.
