Morogoro sits on the main inland road and rail line from Dar es Salaam, but it is more than a place to change buses. The city lies hard against the green wall of the Uluguru Mountains, one of the Eastern Arc ranges, and the slopes begin close enough that a day hike can start from town.
The city itself is busy, practical and unpolished. The Chief Kingalu Market is the best place to feel Morogoro at street level, while the Hindu Mandal Temple hints at the Indian Ocean trading world that reaches inland along Tanzania's transport routes.
Morogoro works best for travellers who like a real town around them: daladalas, produce markets, university students, and mountains at the end of the street. It is also a good soft landing before heading deeper into central or southern Tanzania.
