Anderkilla Shahi Jame Mosque

17th-century Mughal mosque in the heart of the old city

A Mughal-era mosque in the Anderkilla area of central Chittagong, built in 1667 to mark the Mughal capture of the city from the Arakanese. The original three-domed structure has been altered and extended over the centuries — the current building has many more domes and a larger prayer hall — but the original courtyard and mihrab survive intact.

The mosque is in active daily use. Non-Muslim visitors can usually walk into the courtyard but should not enter the prayer hall during prayer times. Worth combining with a walk through the Anderkilla bazaar.

A story
The mosque was built in 1667 by Umed Khan, son of the Mughal governor of Bengal Shaista Khan, in the same year that Shaista Khan's army defeated the Arakanese and Portuguese pirates who had ruled the Chittagong coast. It is the oldest mosque in central Chittagong and one of the few intact Mughal buildings in the city.
