Foy's Lake

Artificial lake in the hills with rides, paddle boats and views

A man-made lake set among the hills on the northern edge of Chittagong, surrounded by an amusement park and a small zoo. The lake itself is the more interesting part — paddle boats and a small ferry cross to picnic areas on wooded hills, and the views back over the lake from the higher trails are good.

The amusement park rides are aimed at families and Bangladeshi day-trippers, who pack the place on holidays. The lake is most pleasant on weekday mornings.

A story
The lake was created in 1924 by damming a stream that ran between the Batali Hills. It was named for the British engineer Mr Foy who designed it; his original purpose was to supply water to the Assam Bengal Railway colonies, not to be a resort. The amusement park came much later.
