Patenga Beach

Wide beach where the Karnaphuli river meets the Bay of Bengal

A long, broad beach at the southern tip of Chittagong, near the Karnaphuli river mouth and the city's main port. Patenga is a busy spot in the evenings when families and young couples come out for a walk, ice cream and a horse-and-cart ride along the sand. The view back across the harbour is full of ships — Patenga is one of the few spots in Bangladesh from which you can clearly watch ocean-going traffic.

Swimming is not safe here because of the currents and the harbour traffic. The beach is reasonably easy to reach by city bus or CNG auto-rickshaw, about 30 minutes from the city centre.
