Shipbreaking Yards

The vast beach where the world's ships come to die

A 12-kilometre stretch of beach north of Chittagong where end-of-life ocean-going ships are run aground and broken up by hand. From the road, you can see hundreds of vessels in every stage of dismantling — some still recognisable as tankers and container ships, others reduced to ribs and plates of steel.

Access to the actual yards is restricted and dangerous, but several roadside viewpoints along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway near Bhatiari give long views over the operation. Photography is officially discouraged. The visit is grim — the conditions for the workers are some of the worst in industrial labour — but it is also one of the most distinctive sights in Bangladesh.

A story
Bangladesh handles about a quarter of the world's annual ship demolition. Tankers, container ships and freighters are deliberately run aground at high tide on the long shallow beach of Sitakunda, where they are dismantled piece by piece by tens of thousands of workers — usually with no protective equipment and under appalling safety conditions.
