Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is an English Gothic Revival church in northern Changsha that serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Changsha. Built in the early twentieth century by French missionaries, the cathedral has the soaring nave and stone construction typical of the Gothic revival style: pointed arches, clerestory windows, and a tower visible from several streets away.

The cathedral is an active place of worship with a substantial congregation. It is open to visitors outside Mass times and provides a striking contrast to the surrounding urban fabric. The archdiocese of Changsha covers Hunan province, reflecting the significant Catholic missionary presence in the region during the late Qing and Republican periods. Free to visit; the surrounding Kaifu district is quiet and residential compared to the city centre a kilometre south.
