Furong District (Old City)

Furong District encompasses the old city centre of Changsha east of the Xiang River — the area that was rebuilt after the 1938 fire and has been rebuilt again in stages through the twentieth century. The district contains most of the major heritage attractions: Tianxin Pavilion, Pozi Street, Taiping Street, the Du Fu River Pavilion, and the Former Residence of Jia Yi all sit within a few kilometres of each other. The district also has the densest concentration of traditional restaurants, teahouses, and street food.

Walking Furong District from the river to the old city wall takes about 45 minutes at a relaxed pace, passing through different eras of Changsha's urban history: Republican-era shophouses, 1950s workers' blocks, 1990s commercial development, and the current wave of heritage restoration. The district is most alive in the evenings when the food vendors set up and the teahouses fill with regulars playing mahjong and chess.
