Orange Island (Juzizhou)

Orange Island (Juzizhou) is a five-kilometre sandbank in the middle of the Xiang River, one of the largest river islands in the world and Changsha's central public space. The island takes its name from the orange trees planted across it; in autumn the citrus perfume carries to both riverbanks. At the southern tip stands a colossal granite sculpture of the young Mao Zedong's head — 32 metres tall, depicting him at the age he spent in Changsha as a young revolutionary. It is one of China's more arresting pieces of public art, whether or not you are interested in its subject.

The island is threaded with walking and cycling paths through gardens and orchards, with views across the Xiang River to the Yuelu Mountains on the west bank. The northern end is wilder and less visited. Entry is free; electric vehicles shuttle visitors along the island's length. The best views of the Mao sculpture are from the path approaching it from the south, or from the river itself. Orange Isle Bridge connects the island to both banks; the nearest metro station is Juzizhou (Line 4). Morning visits before the tour groups arrive give the best experience.

A story
The colossal stone head at the southern tip of the island depicts Mao Zedong at age 32 — the age when he wrote the famous poem "Changsha" during a return visit to the city in 1925. The poem opens with a line that translates roughly as "I stand alone in the autumn cold" and describes looking out from Orange Island over the Xiang River, asking who controls the rise and fall of nations. The sculpture is 32 metres tall. It was completed in 2009 and is visible from much of the western riverbank.
