Changsha Martyrs Park

Changsha Martyrs Park is a large public park in the northern part of the city, built around a lake and dedicated to the memory of the Communist martyrs who died in Hunan during the political struggles of the 1920s and 1930s. Yang Kaihui — Mao Zedong's first wife, executed by the Nationalist government in 1930 — is among those commemorated here, along with thousands of others killed during the anti-communist campaigns. The central memorial is on a hill above the lake; the surrounding park is used by locals for morning exercise, kite-flying, and evening recreation.

The park is a pleasant green space in a part of the city that otherwise lacks them. The lake has rowing boats available for hire; the forested paths are popular with joggers. The memorial itself is straightforward and moving without being overwrought. Free to enter. The park is about 30 minutes' walk north of Wuyi Square, or accessible by metro.
