Xilituzhao Temple (Shiretu Juu)

Xilituzhao Temple (希拉穆仁庙, also called Shiretu Juu in Mongolian) sits just north of Dazhao in the old temple quarter of Hohhot and is often visited on the same walk. The complex is the largest of Hohhot's lamaseries and served as the seat of the Grand Lama, the senior Buddhist authority for the region's Mongolian population. The main hall and assembly rooms are substantial, decorated with gilded statues and hanging tangka paintings, and the courtyard contains several subsidiary shrines and a large incense burner.

The temple survived the Cultural Revolution in damaged form and was restored in the 1980s and 1990s. A small community of monks still resides here and conducts daily rituals; the morning chanting at around 7–8 AM is worth timing a visit around. The surrounding Daqing Street area, running north from the temple, is one of the more authentic commercial streets in the old town, with dried fruit merchants, tea shops, and Mongolian craft vendors.

A story
Xilituzhao was expanded to its present form in the Qing dynasty and served as the seat of the Grand Lama of Hohhot — the highest Buddhist authority for the Mongolian tribes of the region. The ninth Grand Lama of Xilituzhao was Neichi Toyin (1587–1653), one of the most important missionaries of Tibetan Buddhism to the eastern Mongols, who personally converted many Mongolian tribes and established dozens of monasteries across the region. His career transformed the religious geography of eastern Inner Mongolia.
