The Lingqiao area in northwestern central Ningbo is the city's best-preserved cluster of traditional commercial streets, with several blocks of Qing dynasty shophouses, tea houses, and craft workshops still functioning alongside newer businesses. The street pattern follows the original Tang dynasty grid and several of the buildings retain features — carved stone threshold blocks, folding timber shopfronts, courtyard arrangements — that date from Qing-era construction.
The area is not formally designated as a heritage zone, which means it lacks the imposed tidiness of restored ancient streets but also lacks the souvenir shop uniformity. Small family businesses still operate from the ground floors — a tailor, a tea dealer, a traditional medicine dispenser — and the upper storeys are occupied as apartments. Walking through the Lingqiao area on a weekday morning, when residents are going about their daily routines, is one of the more genuine encounters with pre-modernised Ningbo available.
