Yuehu Mosque

The Yuehu Mosque near Moon Lake in central Ningbo is one of the oldest mosques in Zhejiang, dating to the Yuan dynasty when Arab and Persian Muslim merchants formed a significant presence in Ningbo's trading community. The current building has been rebuilt several times, but the mosque has maintained continuous use for nearly seven centuries, a testament to the durability of Ningbo's Muslim community.

The mosque sits on a quiet lane near Moon Lake Park and its design blends Chinese architectural elements — tiled rooflines, courtyard plan, carved wooden screens — with the functional requirements of Islamic worship. The mihrab and minbar inside are in the Chinese mosque style that developed during the Ming dynasty, when Islamic buildings across China adopted Chinese architectural vocabulary while maintaining their liturgical function. The congregation is small and the mosque is not heavily publicised as a tourist site, which makes it a more genuine encounter than the larger and more touristic mosques in some other Chinese cities.
