Taibai Mountain, about twenty-five kilometres east of central Ningbo, is the forested highland that contains both Tiantong Temple and Ayuwang Temple within a national forest park. The mountain rises to about 650 metres and is covered in mixed subtropical forest — camphor, cedar, bamboo, and pine — that gives the area a cool, shaded quality even in summer. Several hiking trails connect the two major temples via forest ridges and valley streams.
The mountain is accessible by bus from Ningbo and the day-trip combination of Tiantong Temple, Ayuwang Temple, and the forest walk between them is one of the best single-day excursions from the city. Spring and autumn are the most atmospheric seasons: spring brings wildflowers and new bamboo growth; autumn turns the ginkgo trees at the temple approaches gold. The mountain has no visitor facilities above the temples themselves, so bring food and water for any extended hiking.
