Ningbo International Convention Centre (Wang Shu)

The Ningbo International Convention Centre, completed in 2014 and designed by Wang Shu (the same architect responsible for the History Museum and Art Museum conversion), continues the architect's exploration of traditional Chinese building techniques and recycled material in a large contemporary building. The centre's roof and facades incorporate locally fired tile and stone elements in patterns derived from traditional Zhejiang craft, set within a contemporary structural framework.

Wang Shu's Ningbo buildings collectively form an unusually coherent body of work for a single city — three major public buildings within a decade, each addressing the question of how contemporary architecture can engage honestly with Chinese material culture rather than adopting either Western modernism or superficial nationalist pastiche. The convention centre is the least accessible of the three (it operates as a business venue rather than a public institution) but its exterior and surrounding public space are worth seeing alongside the Museum visits.
