Old Town Neighbourhood

The old town neighbourhood between TianYi Pavilion, Moon Lake, and the Drum Tower is the most historically coherent part of central Ningbo, with surviving traditional architecture, stone-paved lanes, and a street pattern that follows the Tang and Song dynasty city grid. The area is not a formal museum or tourist zone but a functioning residential and commercial district, and its interest lies precisely in that mixture: old courtyard houses next to convenience stores, stone gateway arches leading to apartment blocks, carved door surrounds on houses whose upper floors were added in the 1980s.

The best walking routes thread north from Tianyi Ge through the back lanes to Moon Lake, then east through the Lingqiao commercial area to the Drum Tower. This circuit covers the most varied and authentic part of old Ningbo in about ninety minutes, passing enough historical detail to justify the time without requiring any entrance fees or tour groups. The morning hours, when residents are shopping and the light is good for photography, are the most rewarding.
