Büyük Han (Great Inn)

The Büyük Han is the largest caravanserai in Cyprus and one of the best-preserved examples of Ottoman civic architecture in the eastern Mediterranean. Built in 1572 immediately after the Ottoman conquest of Nicosia, it served for centuries as accommodation for travelling merchants — 68 rooms arranged on two storeys around a large central courtyard, with a small octagonal mosque (mescid) at the courtyard's centre, raised on pillars so that the water storage beneath would stay clean. The proportions are generous, the stonework confident, and the whole feels built to last.

After decades as a prison and then as housing for Cypriot labourers after independence, the Büyük Han was restored in the 1990s and is now a cultural hub in the Turkish north of the city. The ground-floor rooms house artists' workshops, galleries, and small cafes; the upper level is quieter and gives a better sense of the original rooms. It is one of the most pleasant places in Nicosia to sit and watch people — the courtyard stays cool even in summer. Access requires crossing the Ledra Street checkpoint from the south, which is straightforward; bring your passport.

A story
The Büyük Han was built in 1572 — just two years after the Ottoman conquest — making it one of the first major buildings the new rulers erected in Cyprus. It was designed as a caravanserai to accommodate travelling merchants, with 68 rooms on two floors around a central courtyard. In the British colonial period it served as a prison. After independence it was used as worker housing until falling derelict. Restoration in the 1990s revealed its original quality; it is now considered one of the finest Ottoman buildings in the eastern Mediterranean.
