Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre

The Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre (NiMAC) is the most significant contemporary art venue in Cyprus, housed in a beautifully restored Ottoman-era building near the Pafos Gate. The building — formerly a powerhouse dating from the early 20th century — has been converted into gallery spaces that host rotating exhibitions of Cypriot and international contemporary art, as well as performance and film events. The conversion is handled with care, preserving the industrial architecture while creating flexible, well-lit spaces.

The centre's programming focuses on art that engages with Cypriot identity, the division of the island, and the Mediterranean context. If you are visiting Nicosia with any interest in contemporary culture, this is worth checking. Entry to most exhibitions is free or very low cost. Check the NiMAC website for current programming.
