One of the most atmospheric places in Nicosia's old city is this 16th-century Ottoman bath, built on the site of a 14th-century Augustinian church and still in full working operation. The structure retains its original domed marble interior, with star-shaped skylights that scatter light across the heated marble slabs below — a beautiful and functional design that has changed little in 500 years.
The hamam is open to both men and women (on separate days or in separate sections; check current schedules). A visit includes the standard Turkish bath sequence: relaxation in the warm room, steam in the hot room, and a scrub and massage from the resident attendants. It is one of the more genuine experiences in the city and excellent value. The hamam sits in the Ayios Savvas quarter of the old city, close to the Ömeriye Mosque and within easy walking distance of Laiki Ytonia.
