Nine kilometres north of Jodhpur, Mandore was the capital of Marwar before Rao Jodha moved it to Mehrangarh. What remains is a peaceful set of gardens dotted with the soaring red-sandstone cenotaphs of his predecessors, the eccentric Hall of Heroes carved with painted folk deities, and a small temple ruined by time. Less polished than Jodhpur's headline sights, and all the better for it. Easy to combine with a lunch run from the city.
