Umaid Bhawan Palace

Indo-Deco palace with museum, vintage cars, and royal wing

A vast Indo-Deco sandstone palace completed in 1943, built as a famine relief project that took fifteen years and 3,000 workers. The building is split three ways: the royal family still lives in one wing, a Taj-run luxury hotel occupies another, and the third is open to the public as a museum. The vintage car collection -- Rolls-Royces, a Buick, a Maybach -- and the period photographs of palace life are the main draws.
