The defining sight of Jodhpur and one of the great forts of India, Mehrangarh rises 125 metres straight out of the rock above the old city. Built from 1459 onwards by Rao Jodha, its sandstone walls are in places six metres thick. Inside is a sequence of intricately carved palaces -- Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal -- now an exceptionally well-curated museum of palanquins, weapons, miniatures, and royal cradles. The audio guide is genuinely worth the small extra fee. Allow at least three hours, longer if you take the zip line over the ramparts.
