Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

72-hectare desert ecology park restoring the rocky terrain around Mehrangarh

On the rocky hillside directly below Mehrangarh's western walls, this 72-hectare park has been slowly rewilded since 2006 under the Mehrangarh Museum Trust. The land was stripped bare by invasive vilayati babool (mesquite) over the 20th century; the restoration project has removed it and replanted the native Thar desert flora — khair, rohida, ber, and dozens of other species. The result is something genuinely unusual: a patch of wild desert ecology right beside one of India's most-visited tourist sites.

The walking trails take between one and three hours depending on how far you go. The views of the fort from below are different from those taken from its ramparts — more dramatic, the sheer drop of the cliff more apparent. Early morning is best, both for the light and for birdwatching; the park hosts a good variety of dry-land species. Entry is included with the Mehrangarh Fort ticket.
