Cihampelas Walk

Open-air shopping promenade carved into the old jeans-shop street

Cihampelas Street earned its nickname Jalan Jeans in the 1980s, when every shopfront sprouted larger-than-life Spider-Mans, Supermen and giant denim cowboys to advertise jeans, leather jackets and t-shirts. Many of the originals are gone now, but enough survive that the stroll is still good fun.

The Cihampelas Walk (locals call it Ciwalk) at number 160 is a more conventional open-air mall built around landscaped courtyards — useful for cooler upmarket shopping, restaurants and a cinema, but the real reason to come is the eccentric strip of street-front shops on either side. Bargaining is expected; the marked prices are starting points.
