Pasar Baru — literally "new market," though it has been around since 1884 — is Bandung's main wholesale textile market, a six-storey labyrinth of cotton, silk, batik, kebaya, and ready-to-wear clothing. The ground floors are food stalls and household goods; the upper floors are fabric, fabric, and more fabric, with batik from across Java at the back. Tailors will run up a shirt or suit overnight if you bring the cloth from downstairs.
The surrounding streets are part of Bandung's Chinatown, with old shophouses, herbal-medicine shops, and the Vihara Satya Dharma temple. Combine the two for a different feel from the colonial-era streets a few blocks south.
