Shams-ol-Emareh

Shams-ol-Emareh — the "Palace of the Sun" or "Palace of the Brilliant" — is the ornate multi-storey tower that stands on the eastern facade of the Golestan Palace complex, visible from outside the walls as a distinctive tiled tower. It was built by Nasser al-Din Shah in 1867 as the first multi-storey building in Tehran, combining European architectural influences (particularly in the use of iron structural elements) with Iranian tile work and decorative traditions.

The building is visually remarkable from outside — its six storeys of ceramic tile in blue and yellow, flanked by two smaller towers, stand out against the mostly low-rise surroundings. The interior staircase and the view from the upper floors are accessible as part of the Golestan Palace ticket. The clock on the facade is one of the first European-style clocks installed on a public building in Iran.

A story
When Nasser al-Din Shah built Shams-ol-Emareh in 1867, he specified that it had to be tall enough for him to see the city and hear the call to prayer from the minarets of the Grand Bazaar mosque. He had been inspired by buildings he had seen on a visit to Europe — the first Iranian shah to travel to Europe — and wanted something in the European style. The result is neither quite European nor quite Persian, but something entirely its own: a tilework-covered tower that looks like it was designed by an Ottoman architect who had once visited Belgium.
