Tabiat Bridge

Tabiat Bridge — "Nature Bridge" — is a pedestrian bridge connecting two public parks in northern Tehran (Taleghani and Ab-o-Atash parks) across the Modarres highway. It is the most impressive work of contemporary architecture in the city: a three-level, 270-metre structure in weathered steel that twists and branches as it crosses, so that each level has a different view and a different character. Cafés and rest areas are integrated into the structure.

It is not just a bridge but a public space — a destination in itself, particularly in the evenings when Tehran's famously warm nights draw people out to walk and talk on the terrace levels. The views over the illuminated highway and the park are genuinely striking. The bridge is most atmospheric after dark, when the structural lighting is on and the cafés are busy.

A story
Tabiat Bridge was designed by Leila Araghian, who was 26 years old when she won the design competition in 2010. It was her first major commission. The bridge opened in 2014 and immediately became both the most acclaimed piece of contemporary architecture in Tehran and one of the most popular public spaces in the city — receiving several million visitors in its first year. Araghian subsequently won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
