The artificial island and harbour district in Osaka Bay, home to the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel, the Osaka Museum of the Harbour (closed and awaiting redevelopment), and the Tempozan Marketplace. The area was built on reclaimed land and opened as a leisure complex in the 1990s, and while some of the original concept has aged, the aquarium and the ferris wheel remain well worth the trip from the centre.
The Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel, at 112.5 metres, was briefly the world's largest when it opened in 1997. One gondola is entirely glass-floored, and the views from the top extend across Osaka Bay to the distant mountains. The wheel is illuminated at night, and the display changes depending on the next day's forecast weather — a local equivalent of the weather stone. Ferry services to Kobe depart from the nearby terminal.
