Hakone Onsen

Hakone has over twenty distinct onsen (hot spring) resort areas, each fed by different geothermal springs with slightly different mineral compositions. The best-known are Hakone-Yumoto at the valley entrance, Miyanoshita on the mountain slope (oldest and most elegant), Kowakidani, Sengokuhara in the plateau, and Togendai on the lakeshore.

Most ryokan and resort hotels have their own private hot spring baths for guests. Day visitors can access onsen at the Tenzan Tohji-kyo resort in Hakone-Yumoto, the Hakone Kowakien Yunessun water park (onsen slides and theme pools), and various public bath facilities throughout the area. The water quality varies: some springs have a skin-smoothing silica content, others are more sulphurous.
