The volcanic complex that forms Hakone's mountain backdrop — not a single peak but a series of overlapping calderas and secondary cones, the highest point being Mount Kami at 1,438 metres. The outer caldera rim creates the ring of mountains that circles Lake Ashi; the inner caldera contains the lake itself; and the younger inner cones include Owakudani and the peaks that the ropeway crosses.
Hiking on the higher ridges is possible via trails from Sounzan and the ropeway stations. The views from the summit ridge — Fuji to the north, the Izu Peninsula and Pacific to the south — are exceptional on clear days. Winter snow can make the upper trails slippery.
