Okada Museum of Art

The largest art museum in Hakone, opened in 2013 by the founder of the Okada Group, with a collection of around 450 Japanese, Chinese, and Korean artworks spanning some 5,000 years. The building is purpose-built and impressive — a sleek structure that descends underground into the hillside, with galleries on five floors.

The outdoor foot bath (ashiyu) at the garden entrance is free and a welcome rest stop on a walking day. The collection includes outstanding examples of Jomon pottery, Tang dynasty ceramics, and Edo-period screens. The garden contains a Momoyama-period teahouse and seasonal plantings. Admission around 2,800 yen — expensive, but the collection justifies it.
