Hakone Ropeway

The aerial cable car that crosses the Hakone volcano from Sounzan to Togendai on the lakeshore, passing directly over the steaming Owakudani valley en route. The full 4 km journey takes about 25 minutes and offers aerial views of the volcanic landscape, the lake below, and — when weather permits — Mount Fuji in the distance. It is the most exhilarating section of the standard Hakone transport circuit.

The ropeway runs every 30 seconds in normal operation. Closes periodically when volcanic gas concentrations at Owakudani rise above safe levels; check the website before visiting. Covered by the Hakone Free Pass.
