Abdoun & West Amman

West Amman — centred on the affluent suburbs of Abdoun, Sweifieh, and the numbered circles radiating from the 4th and 5th circle intersections — is where the city's wealthier Jordanians and much of the expat community live. The streets here are wider, the villas more spacious, and the restaurant and bar scene more international. Mecca Street in Sweifieh has some of the best restaurants in the city in either direction.

Abdoun specifically is known for its cluster of cafes and restaurants around the Abdoun Circle bridge and the upscale shops in the adjacent streets. The area is expensive by Jordanian standards and the atmosphere is closer to Beirut than to the Arab-conservative downtown. The contrast between Abdoun and Al Balad — barely 5 kilometres apart — captures Amman's split character very well.
