Old Signs of Amman Museum

A small private museum in the downtown area housing a collection of over 1,000 old street signs, commercial signs, shop fronts, and advertising materials from Amman dating from the 1940s through the 1980s. The collection was assembled by one man's lifelong habit of salvaging signs as the old city changed, and it amounts to an unintended visual history of Amman's commercial life over four decades.

The Arabic-script signs, old pharmaceutical advertisements, street plates from demolished neighbourhoods, and painted shop signs document a city that no longer exists in physical form. It is the kind of place that appeals strongly if you have any interest in vernacular graphic design or urban history, and passes quickly if you don't. Entry is very cheap or free by donation.
