Sports City is a sprawling sports and leisure complex in the north of Amman built in the 1960s during the Arab sporting nationalism of that period. The complex includes a large football stadium, athletics tracks, tennis courts, and various other facilities, all set in a substantial green park area. What makes it interesting is how it functions now: the formal sporting facilities share space with families picnicking on the grass, vendors selling snacks, young men playing football on any flat surface, and dogs sleeping in the shade.
It is the kind of place that functions as the city's informal common — a public park in a city that has relatively few of them. Friday afternoons are particularly good for observing Amman's social variety in one place.
