Jabal al-Luweibdeh

Jabal al-Luweibdeh (also spelled Weibdeh) is one of Amman's most charming districts — a hilltop neighbourhood of early-20th-century stone houses, art galleries, cafes, and the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts. It developed as a middle-class residential area in the 1920s and 1930s and retains much of that character: wide streets for the area, old family houses now divided into apartments and studios, and a concentration of the city's cultural institutions.

The neighbourhood is particularly good for an afternoon walk: the Jordan National Gallery, Darat al-Funun (a contemporary art centre in a converted 1920s villa), and several independent galleries and bookshops are all within easy walking distance. The cafes here are quieter than those on Rainbow Street and popular with Amman's artists and intellectuals.
