Mango Street

Mango Street is a historic street in the First Circle area of Jabal Amman, named after the mango tree that once stood here — an unusual ornamental tree for this climate, planted by a Lebanese merchant family in the early 20th century. The street and the adjacent Mango House (one of the oldest villas surviving from Amman's earliest residential development) give a sense of the old diplomatic and merchant quarter that grew up on Jabal Amman in the 1920s and 1930s.

The street is now quiet and residential, largely bypassed by the main Rainbow Street traffic above it. Walking it as part of a loop down from Rainbow Street and back up through the stone-paved alleys gives the best introduction to how the old Jabal Amman neighbourhood looked before modern construction arrived.
