Friday Market (Souq al-Juma)

The Friday Market — Souq al-Juma — is Amman's main flea market, spread along al-Talyani Street west of the downtown. Every Friday from early morning, dealers and private sellers spread their wares on the ground: old electronics, tools, second-hand clothes, antiques both genuine and dubious, brassware, books in Arabic and English, Palestinian embroidery, old tiles, and quantities of inexplicable junk. The animal section at one end sells birds, rabbits and occasionally stranger livestock.

It is the most democratic and characterful market in the city — not curated for tourists, not sanitised, and genuinely mixed in who shows up to buy and sell. Arrive early (before 9am) for the best pickings and the coolest weather. Bargaining is expected. The market winds down by midday.
