Things to Do

Kuwait City's sights are concentrated along the waterfront corniche. The Kuwait Towers are the unmistakable landmark — their observation deck gives the best view of the city. The Souk Al-Mubarakiya, a covered market near the old centre, is the most atmospheric place in the city for a morning wander: spice merchants, gold dealers, and food stalls in a compact, genuinely lived-in setting. The Tareq Rajab Museum holds one of the finest private collections of Islamic art in the world, and is free. The National Museum tells the broader story of Kuwait's heritage, including the harrowing account of the 1990 Iraqi invasion and the looting of its collections. The Grand Mosque offers free guided tours for non-Muslim visitors. For a sense of Kuwait before oil, Sadu House and Bayt Al-Badr offer glimpses of the pre-oil townscape. Al Shaheed Park provides welcome green space. The Liberation Tower at 372 metres is the highest vantage point in the country. For the genuinely unusual, the House of Mirrors in Rumaithiya — a private house covered entirely in mirror mosaics — is one of the most extraordinary things in Kuwait.
