Bintulu is an industrial town on the coast of Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo, built on oil and gas money. The Petronas LNG complex just outside town is one of the largest in the world, and the town's rapid growth shows — modern buildings, wide roads, and a transient expat population give it a different feel from the more characterful towns of Sarawak.
Few tourists come to Bintulu deliberately, but it serves as a stopover between Sibu and Miri, and as a jumping-off point for Similajau National Park, about 30 kilometres northeast along the coast, where jungle trails lead to quiet beaches and you can sometimes spot crocodiles in the river mouths.
