Semenyih sits southeast of Kuala Lumpur, close enough to feel suburban on a weekday and far enough out to be useful when the city has worn you down. The town itself is busy rather than pretty, but the hills and forest east of it make a good, low-effort escape from KL.
The reason to come is the Broga side of town. Broga Hill is the classic sunrise hike: short, sweaty, crowded on weekends, and still worth it for the open grass ridges above the plantations. Nearby Sak Dato Temple adds a flash of Taoist colour and hillside views, while Mount Tok Wan gives stronger walkers a rougher extension beyond Broga Hill.
North of town, Sungai Tekala Recreation Forest is a simple river-and-picnic stop in the Selangor State Park system. None of this is polished resort country. Semenyih works best as a half-day or full-day from Kuala Lumpur: hike early, eat in town or Broga, and cool off under the trees before traffic thickens again.
