Coliseum Cafe

Atmospheric 1921 colonial restaurant on Jalan TAR, famous for Hainanese pork chops and sizzling steaks

A colonial-era restaurant on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman that has barely changed since the 1920s — dark wood panelling, slow ceiling fans, mahogany bar, faded photographs of British rubber planters on the walls. The signature dish is the Hainanese-style sizzling sirloin steak, brought to the table on a cast-iron platter spitting hot, accompanied by chips and a green-pea-and-onion-gravy sauce.

The food is not extraordinary but the room is, and the price is gentle (mains RM 30-50). The long bar still does the original Coliseum cocktail menu — gimlets, stengahs, the works. Located a five-minute walk north from Masjid Jamek LRT station, opposite the Sogo department store. The cinema downstairs is also Coliseum, still running, and still showing films.

A story
The Coliseum opened in 1921 above a cinema of the same name and served sizzling sirloin steaks on cast-iron platters to British planters, tin-mining magnates, and travelling writers — Somerset Maugham among them. The same steak, with the same bib, is still on the menu today.
