Mersing

East Johor ferry town with fishing boats, quiet beaches and access to offshore islands.

Mersing is the east-coast Johor town where many travellers pass through on the way to Tioman and the islands. That gateway role is real, but the town is not just a ticket counter. It has a slow, salt-edged rhythm: fishing boats on the Mersing River, simple seafood places, old shophouses, and the feeling of a Malaysian coast town that has not been remade for style.

The best reason to pause is the landscape around town. Mersing Town Forest Park gives you a quick green escape above the streets, Sultan Iskandar Sea Park sits by the waterfront, and Air Papan has a long beach backed by low hills north of town.

Mersing works best for independent travellers with a little time between buses and ferries, or anyone driving the quieter east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is modest, but a spare half-day here beats sitting indoors waiting for the boat.

Beaches

The best beaches near Mersing sit outside the centre, especially north toward Air Papan and Penyabung. They are quieter than Malaysia's better-known resort beaches and are better for a picnic or a walk than for a built-up beach scene.

Getting There

Mersing is linked by bus with Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and towns along Malaysia's east coast. Services can be thin at awkward times, so check onward connections if you are trying to meet a ferry.

By road, the town is reached from Johor Bahru via Kota Tinggi, from Kluang via Federal Route 50, or from Kuantan along the coastal Route 3.
