Ganatantra Smarak (Democracy Memorial Park)

The Ganatantra Smarak is a small park adjacent to the Narayanhiti Palace grounds, established after Nepal's transition to a federal democratic republic in 2008. It commemorates those who died in the decade-long Maoist civil war and in the various pro-democracy movements that preceded the end of the monarchy. The park includes sculptures, inscriptions, and memorial elements designed in a contemporary Nepali style.

The location — next to the former royal palace that symbolised the monarchy — was chosen deliberately. The park is not large but it has a certain weight of meaning: the juxtaposition of the republican memorial and the palace walls captures something of the transition Nepal has been living through.
