Shiva-Parvati Temple

The Shiva-Parvati Temple stands on the north side of Durbar Square, its carved wooden windows particularly famous for the statues of Shiva and Parvati that lean out from the upper window and look down at the activity in the square below — a rare and intimate portrayal of divine domesticity in what is otherwise a world of formal iconography. The posture suggests a couple watching their neighbourhood from a window, which in a sense is exactly what they are doing.

The temple was built in the early 19th century, which makes it relatively young by Durbar Square standards, though the style follows the traditional Newar pagoda form. Non-Hindus may not enter the temple interior but the exterior and the carved window are the main attraction in any case.
