Nepali Folk Musical Instrument Museum

Address Durbar Square area, Kathmandu

A small but well-curated museum near Durbar Square documenting the musical instruments of Nepal's many ethnic communities. The collection includes drums, string instruments, wind instruments, and ritual objects from communities across the country, from the Himalayan north to the Terai lowlands — materials, construction techniques, and playing styles that vary enormously.

The museum is quiet and often uncrowded, which makes it a good refuge from the intensity of Durbar Square outside. Staff are knowledgeable about the collection and often willing to demonstrate instruments if asked. A short visit here adds considerable depth to the experience of hearing music at festivals and temples around Kathmandu.

A story
Nepal has an extraordinary diversity of musical traditions — Tamang, Newari, Tharu, Gurung, Sherpa, and dozens of others — each with distinct instruments, tuning systems, and ceremonial functions. Many of these instruments are not made or played anywhere else in the world, and some traditions are at risk of dying out as younger generations move to cities. The museum's collection is an act of preservation as much as education.
