Kashmiri Masjid

The Kashmiri Masjid (Pancha Kashmiri Takiya Masjid), near Rani Pokhari, is one of the oldest mosques in Nepal, dating to the 15th century. It serves Kathmandu's small Muslim community — descended mainly from Kashmiri traders who followed the ancient route through the Himalaya — and stands quietly amid the commercial bustle of central Kathmandu as a reminder of the city's religious diversity.

Visitors are welcome outside prayer times; ask at the entrance if in doubt. The mosque is modest in scale and unpretentious in decor, which gives it a genuine feeling of daily use rather than monument status.

A story
The Pancha Kashmiri Takiya Masjid is said to have been established in the 15th century by Kashmiri Muslim traders who settled in Kathmandu along the old India-Tibet trade route. It is one of the oldest mosques in Nepal. The Muslim community in Kathmandu — descended primarily from Kashmiri merchants and later from other South Asian groups — has coexisted with the valley's Hindu and Buddhist majority for six centuries with little recorded conflict.
