Khanpur Mahar

Sindh agricultural city in fertile Ghotki District, tied to sugarcane, cotton, and the Qadirpur gas field.

Khanpur Mahar is a city in Tehsil Khangarh Sharif, Ghotki District, in the Sindh province of Pakistan. It is the largest city in Ghotki District by area.

The city is an agricultural hub and an important economic centre for sugarcane and cotton crops. The surrounding land is very fertile, also producing wheat and rice. To the west, the Qadirpur gas field is one of Pakistan's largest onshore producers, and a major employer in the area.

Khanpur Mahar has hot weather for most of the year, with winter lasting only about three months.

Getting There

Khanpur Mahar sits on the main north-south road and rail corridor of the Indus plain. The N-5 national highway and the Karachi–Peshawar railway both pass close by, and trains stop at Sarhad railway station a few kilometres south. The nearest cities of any size are Ghotki and Sukkur to the south. Most travellers passing through are on their way to Punjab or down towards the Sindh coast.

Things to Do

Khanpur Mahar is a small market town and not a tourist destination in any sense. The interest is mainly agricultural — the fields, the sugarcane mills, the cattle markets — and the nearby Indus, which has shaped life in this part of Sindh for thousands of years. Travellers passing through tend to be on their way north to Punjab or south to Sukkur.
