Matinloc Shrine

A surreal stop on El Nido Tour C: a half-ruined religious complex on the uninhabited island of Matinloc, complete with a statue of the Virgin facing out to sea, an abandoned chapel, and a staircase up to a small lookout tower. The site was built in the early 1980s and never finished or maintained; weeds grow through the pews, the paint is flaking off the statue, and the whole place feels deeply un-Philippine.

The five-minute scramble up to the viewpoint is the real reason to stop here — it gives you the best panoramic view of the outer archipelago. Wear shoes; the path is rough and the rock sharp.

A story
The shrine to Our Lady of Matinloc was built in 1982 by a Marian devotee — and was abandoned shortly afterwards. The complex, with a small chapel, a statue and a viewing tower, has been slowly reclaimed by the jungle and now feels almost as old as the surrounding cliffs.
